All families would have received an email today (24th November) discussing the upcoming vote on the age groups – in particular whether the cutoff date for defining age groups should change from 30th September to 31 December.
If this age group change goes ahead, athletes with birthdays between 1st October and 31 December will jump two age groups between this season and next, i.e. from U10 to U12, as one example.
This will directly affect around one quarter of our athletes, and indirectly affect many of the rest as age group based friendships (and some relay teams) may change – although realistically I expect that the athletes should adapt to the new age groups once the 2018/19 season gets underway.
Regardless, we recognise that these changes will be disruptive to many athletes and families.
The reason for this age group change is to better align Little Athletics age groups with schools athletic age groups, and also with senior athletics age groups – both of these groups have Dec 31 cutoffs. These are worthwhile aims in themselves, but perhaps more importantly, if Little Athletics Victoria does not make this change, it will not able to affiliate with Little Athletics Australia next season, so providing an uncertain future. Every other state has adopted the new age group definitions.
For this reason, the committee of Keilor has previously supported this change of age group (in line with the recommendations of Little Athletics Victoria) and intends to do the same at the next vote on 17th December.
If you have any questions about this, please come back to me.
Mike Lloyd, Keilor President,
