Proactive is returning to coach our athletes for this year. So who are the Proactive coaches?
SONJA KIERNAN – HEAD COACH
Sonja Kiernan is the founder of Proactive and a program manager at the College of Sport and Exercise Science at Victoria University. Since its founding in 2003, Sonja has built Proactive up to include 15 coaches for the 2014/15 season which will train athletes from ProActive squads, Keilor and Coburg Little Athletic Centres, Athletics Coaching Director at Overnewton Anglican College as well as consulting at various sports clubs. Athletes coached by Sonja have competed at Elite levels of Australian athletics and Australian football as well as many other sports, and yet Sonja has retained a strong interest in inclusive coaching of athletes with special needs.
Hello, I am Riley Caines. I’m 15 years old and I have been competing at KLAC for 10 years. I enjoy competing at Keilor and l have made lifelong long friends. My favourite events are Hurdles and Triple Jump .I also love to compete in relays for Team Keilor. Always remember to be the best you can be!

I started athletics at KLAC centre as an under 11 competitor, enjoying 100m, 200m, hurdles and jumps. At KLAC I broke and still hold the u11’s 60m Hurdles Record by the end of my Little Athletics career I achieved holding the u16 100m, 200m, 90m hurdles and triple jump records. I am also the current Northern Metro Region u16 record holder for 100m, 200m, 90m hurdles and triple jump. I have represented KLAC at State meets and Relay Championships.
I have represented Victoria twice at National level in 100m, triple jump and 100m hurdles, coming 4th in Australia in both triple jump and 100m hurdles in 2014.
I started the athletics experience when I was 11 turning 12. I did it for the fitness side of my ability to be able to run in football and use my skill to excel in my sporting career. I started training with the ProActive squad 2008/2009 along-side Sonja Kiernan. I enjoy my sport as well as succeeding in my academic area of performance. I love watching football and watching my favourite team Collingwood play (especially their form in 2010.)
My personal athletic achievements include state title and representing Australia in athletics.
I have been with Keilor Athletics for 10yrs and training with Pro-Active for 7yrs. l was selected to be KLAC Track and Field Captain. I was also selected to represent Victoria at the ALAC in 2013. l have also been selected to go to Canberra for the National U15 Camp this year. I have won Overall girl for Keilor 4yrs in a row.
I have my level 1 first aid certificate. l am currently completing my Cert II in Sport Recreation. l enjoy working, helping others and l am always there to support my follow peers.
Currently in my third and final year of a bachelor of Exercise Science and Human Movement at Victoria University. Aiming to go on and commence my masters in Clinical Exercise Science and Rehabilitation next year and become a fully accredited Exercise Physiologist. I have a strong passion for exercise/fitness, been involved in sport all my life. When I’m not out on the track I’m working as a swimming instructor Also I’m a competitive power lifter who loves training and lifting heavy weights!

After several years of training with Proactive, Bella has represented the squad in both state and national level athletics competitions. Bella has had previous coaching experience with Keilor Little Athletics Club, Coburg Little Athletics Club, and Overnewton Anglican Community College.

– 12th place in the Women’s U15/16 800m All Schools National Championship
– 3rd place in the Women’s U15 90m hurdles State Schools Competition
– 4th place in the Women’s U16 800m State Youth Championship
– 19th place in the Women’s U16 800m National Youth Championship
– 1st place in the Women’s U14-16 Medley State Relay Competition
My name is Patrick Martin, I am fifteen years old and I have been doing athletics for eight seasons. I have been coaching for ProActive for two years. My specialty events are the 200m and the 400m. During my time as an athlete I have
– competed in multiple state championships, in both relays
– been awarded fifteen state medals.
– represented Victoria in a national final in the 200m in 2012.
I also play football for West Coburg for the past seven years and have just completed my second season as a football umpire.
Athletics has been a great sport to help develop confidence and a high level of fitness,
I have been doing Athletics for 10 years now, and 8 of those years I have trained with ProActive Coaching. Through-out these many years of athletics I have accumulated multiple achievements including State Relay Medals, State Track and Field Finalist, Selected to compete as apart of the 50 year anniversary of Little Athletics and was awarded Centre Caption of CLAC. Training with ProActive for many years has allowed me to learn about athletic development and I have been able to coach under the wisdom of Sonja. I have coached for Coburg Little Athletics, Keilor Little Athletics and Overnewton College.
